Daily Readings: Joshua 13 and Psalm 13
When every other tribe was being assigned land, the Levites had none apportioned to them. Why not? They were to be unencumbered by land and farming in order to serve the Lord in His tabernacle. For their material support they were entitled to a portion of the offerings brought to the Lord. God explained His rationale for this in Numbers 18:20 “Then the Lord said to Aaron, ‘You shall have no inheritance in their land nor own any portion among them; I am your portion and your inheritance among the sons of Israel.’”
The attitude and approach God desired from them is the one expressed in Psalm 73:26, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” and in Psalm 142: 5, “I cried out to You, O Lord; I said, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”
Lord, give me the heart of a Levite – one that sincerely feels that You are my Portion and my very great reward, and that when I have You I have everything I need. Help me to find my identity and purpose in my relationship with You, not in my possessions, my position or other people. Give me a heart that is pleasing to You, Lord, and help me to find my greatest delight in You, all the days of my life. Amen.
