Hidden realities

Daily Readings: Joshua 18 and Psalm 18

In Psalm 18 David seems to be recounting a fierce battle in which he nearly died. If we were to take God out of the picture of the psalm, all that would be left is a sudden ambush in a dangerous place, a blood-stained battle-field, a sudden fierce hailstorm with thunder, lightning, rushing clouds and wind, resulting in a dramatic landslide and all of this somehow helping David to escape his enemies victoriously.

“Wow, that was lucky,” the atheist might say. But with the eyes of faith, David says: “I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies.” (v.3) Then he goes on to recount how God thundered and God came in the clouds and then “rescued me because he delighted in me.” (v.19)

Heavenly Father, help me to perceive the hidden realities behind the events of my life today. Open my eyes to see Your hidden hand at work, my mind to perceive Your goodness, and my heart to experience Your loving presence in even the most ordinary moments. You are with me. You are mighty to save. Help me to know You today. Amen.
