Daily Readings: Joshua 19 and Psalm 19.
After leading the people of God in so many victories, and patiently administering the allocation of land, Joshua had left someone out. Himself. In v.49-50 we read, “When they had finished dividing the land into its allotted portions, the Israelites gave Joshua son of Nun an inheritance among them, as the Lord had commanded.” Reading that, I get such a profound impression of the humility of Joshua. He received what God had promised to him but, in remarkable humility, he received his portion last – almost as a “favour” from the nation he has led. This is such a wonderful prophetic foreshadowing of Jesus’ humble service and His concern for the well-being of others.
Thank You Lord for the beautiful example Joshua gives us of a life lived in humble service of Your greater plans and purposes. Like Jesus, Joshua could never be described as weak or ineffective. He was a mighty warrior and general, yet he did not use his power in his own interests. Help me today to prioritise the wellbeing of others over my own, and so to mirror the grace of Jesus towards us all. In His Name I pray. Amen.
