The Cycle of Sin

Daily Readings: Judges 2 and Psalm 26

In Judges 2 we get a preview of the entire book. Throughout Judges we will see God’s people caught in a vicious cycle of falling into idolatry and immorality in disobedience to the God who had saved and blessed them – suffering the consequences of their disobedience – repenting of their sin and being graciously rescued by the Lord through a “judge” – experiencing a season of security and prosperity – and then falling back into the same idolatry and immorality all over again. They just never seemed to learn the lesson. Generation after generation they kept bumping their heads and repeating the errors of their ancestors.

Heavenly Father, we marvel at how graciously You forgive and restore us when we repent. You are truly slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness – even when we fall short over and over again. Please help us, Holy Spirit, to remain faithful and not to fall into our old habitual sins. Help us to learn the lessons of our past mistakes, and not to repeat them time after time. By a supreme work of Your transforming power, bring us to the point of being able to say with the Psalmist: “I have led a blameless life; I have trusted in the Lord and have not faltered. Test me, Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind; for I have always been mindful of your unfailing love and have lived in reliance on your faithfulness.” May this be true of us, by Your grace. Amen.
