Merciful Rescue

Daily Readings: Judges 4 and Psalm 28

“Save your people and bless your inheritance; be their shepherd and carry them for ever.” (v.9) David’s prayer in Psalm 28 must be the sort of cry the Israelites also raised to God from beneath the cruel oppression of Jabin (Judges 4). It was their own rebellion against God that had brought them there. They had wandered from God to paths of evil. And yet, when they cried to God their Shepherd, He raised up a prophet and leader, Deborah, to deliver them yet again. The whole book of Judges is not only a testimony to the repeated rebellion of Israel, but also to the constantly repeated mercy of God. The cry of the Israelites and that of Psalm 28:2 was (and is) always answered, because our God is truly the God of constant mercy: “Hear my cry for mercy as I call to you for help, as I lift up my hands towards your Most Holy Place.” Thanks be to God!

Father, no matter what form of mercy we need today – financial rescue, physical healing, deliverance from abuse, forgiveness of our rebellious ways – hear our cry and have mercy on us. Be our Shepherd and carry us today. We praise You Lord, for You have heard our cry for mercy. You are our strength and our shield; our hearts trusts in You, and You help us. As we anticipate Your rescue, our hearts leap for joy, and we praise You! Amen!
