Credit to the Lord alone

Daily Readings: Judges 5 and Psalm 29

Deborah’s song in Judges 5 is a victory celebration that feels rather awkward. Certainly, she praises God and acknowledges that He won this great victory for her and for Israel. Yet it carries a note of self-congratulation (“until, I, Deborah arose” v.7), of naming and shaming those who held back (Gilead, Dan and Asher in v.12), and of cruel mockery of the mourning families of the slain (v.28-30). It’s an important reminder that we humans often struggle to recognise our own failings and give proper recognition to the greatness of God’s mercy. Let us remember and celebrate today that: “The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace.” (Psalm 29:11)

Father, every good and perfect gift comes from You. Every triumph, every victory, every miracle, is ultimately from Your gracious hand. Thank You! We acknowledge and praise You for Your great love and kindness to us, displayed in so many ways each day. Amen.
