As they saw fit

Daily readings: Judges 17-18 and Psalm 41

Unless we notice Judges 17:6 very clearly, we will fail to understand the next few chapters of Judges: “In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.” This is an absolute recipe for disaster and precedes chapter upon chapter of woeful sin, superstition and backsliding.

Today the secularised worldview encourages each individual to do as “I see fit” in different words. It tells me to “own my truth”, to determine my own identity, and to acknowledge no authority greater than my own over my body and life. It all sounds so good. Yet to adopt this worldview unquestioningly is to deny the reality, presence and authority of the God who gives us life and breath and everything else in the first place. True life and true freedom is actually found in submission to the Lord of life – not in exalting ourselves over Him in order to do as we please.

Heavenly Father, please forgive me for moments when I have exalted myself and my own desires above You and Your authority in my life. I humbly surrender to Your Lordship and leading, through Jesus Christ, and in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen
