Daily Readings: 1 Samuel 1 and Psalm 49
Hannah’s passionate prayers are deeply moving. She was so desperate for God to grant her plea that Eli had the impression she was drunk as she poured out her heart to the Lord. ‘Not so, my lord,’ Hannah replied, ‘I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord. Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.’ (v.15-16)
How passionate are your prayers? As for me, I find Hannah very challenging and convicting. All too often my prayers are very respectable, polite and passionless. Even when I am praying about things that matter to me a lot, no one would mistake my prayers for drunkenness. I am just not desperate or passionate enough. Hannah’s prayers challenge me to really pour out my heart to God when I pray, and not simply ask politely.
Heavenly Father, forgive my passionless praying. Holy Spirit light a fire of fresh zeal in my prayers. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
