Daily Readings: 1 Samuel 10 and Psalm 56
The calling of God on Saul’s life was confirmed for him by numerous signs, by an amazing and powerful encounter with the Holy Spirit, and by the gift of prophecy. One would think that after such powerful confirmation and anointing, Saul would be full of confidence and zeal for the calling to be king of God’s people. Yet, when he gets home among his own family and friends he tells no-one of these encounters with God, and even tries to hide away physically when Samuel leads the public recognition of his calling.
Here is a man with great potential and a great call from God, but his self-doubt and inability to entrust himself entirely to God are getting in the way. As his story unfolds in the coming chapters, we will see how this inability to trust God and rise to the occasion with godly leadership will dog him and lead to his ultimate downfall.
Heavenly Father, help me to embrace the calling You have on my life today. I am not called to be a king, but whatever my calling may be, Holy Spirit, grant me the courage and the power to accomplish it for the glory of God. Amen!
