Daily Readings: 1 Samuel 15 and Psalm 61

Although some of what happens in 1 Samuel 15 can feel out of step with what we have learned about God through the perfect revelation of Jesus, I invite you to marvel at the eternal truths about God that are revealed in this chapter. In it we learn that our God is:

• God Almighty,
• The God of Justice who deals with evil in uncompromising ways,
• HOLY,
• Worthy of absolute obedience,
• Not deceived by our public relations “spin”,
• Delighted with our obedience, not with religious rituals,
• Glorious, and
• Unchanging!

In a nutshell I would conclude that God is to be honoured and obeyed with reverence, and never to be trifled with!

Today, let us keep our eyes open to perceive the ways God reveals Himself to us, and let us be committed to walking closely in step with the will of God as it has been revealed to us in Jesus.

Heavenly Father, by Your love preserve us from the arrogance and self-centredness that led to Saul’s downfall. Help us, Holy Spirit, to live lives pleasing to our Father in heaven this day. Amen.
