Faithful Friendship

Daily Reading: 1 Samuel 20 and Psalm 66

The loyal friendship between David and Jonathan somehow survived Saul’s murderous hatred. Both of them were so committed to their brotherly love that they maintained the covenant bond of friendship despite the fact that David clearly needed to flee for his life; and despite the fact that God had promised David the kingdom which Jonathan would otherwise have inherited. Their friendship surpassed these potential pitfalls by the power of Godly love and grace.

They would only meet once again, shortly before Jonathan’s death, but through all those years, they continued to be faithful to each other. Even after Saul and Jonathan’s death (as we shall see in a later chapter) David remained faithful to that covenant and kept his promises to Jonathan.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of friendship and brotherly love which these two godly men set for us. Please use me as a faithful friend to others, and shine the light of Your love through me to them. Grant me a sacrificial spirit, so that I may build my friends up in love, treat them with honour and graciously serve their needs in Your Name. Amen.
