Daily Readings: 1 Samuel 23 and Psalm 69
In Psalm 69:4 David wrote, “many are my enemies without cause”. He might have been thinking of the events of 1 Samuel 23 (among many others) when the people of Keilah were ready to hand him over to Saul despite him having rescued them from the Philistines, or the Ziphites, who went out of their way to betray his whereabouts. It would have been easy to despair, yet in moments like these David turned to God, praying: “Answer me, Lord, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me.” (Ps 69:16) He trusted the Lord’s goodness, love and mercy to guide him, and God did so indeed. In a moment that could only have been orchestrated by God, David and his men were circling one way round a hill, concealing themselves from Saul’s pursuing army on the other side of the hill. David’s prayer had been, “Come near and rescue me; deliver me because of my foes.” (Ps. 69:18) And now God did so as, at that precise moment, a messenger arrived and called Saul away to face a dangerous threat from the Philistines.
Over and over in this season of his life, David was learning to call on God for deliverance and to trust God against all odds!
LORD my God, lead and guide me today in Your paths of abundance and righteousness, and deliver me from the traps and temptations that come against me from the evil one. Show the glory of Your goodness in my life today I pray, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
