A Good Friday Prayer

Daily Reading: Luke 23:26-49

A Prayer for Good Friday: Lord Jesus, as we sit at the foot of Your Cross, we are filled with wonder and with awe at the love that brought you to this moment. In the deepest humility, Lord, we confess that we have no offering to bring from our side, that could ever measure up and be fitting for such a sacrifice on Your part.

You were willing, Lord, to go to the Cross so that people might forever be impacted by it as a profound sign of Your love – and so that we might be drawn to the foot of the Cross, to have our hard hearts melted by  the knowledge of Your love for us, and for all people everywhere.

When we see a love like Yours laying down its life … we recognise that the only fitting sacrifice is to love You in return … with every breath of life You grant us!

Your love, O Lord, is perfect in every way. It does not ebb and flow. It never grows weary. It never runs out. It is constant, year after year, generation after generation, age after age. Constant, infinite, prefect love.

O Lord, may our hearts be opened to that love today. May Your love come and reign in our hearts. May Your healing love invade every corner of our hearts and minds today (even as we worship You) – healing our sorrows, healing our pain, healing our frustrations, defeats and despairs.

May this Good Friday create in us a love for You that is so much stronger than sentimentality or religion … a love that yearns to know Your will and to do it … not out of obligation … but out of love.

So Lord, may Good Friday 2022 be the first day of a new and deeper experience of Your love than ever before. And may it be the beginning of a new way of living … a way of living that will be the best possible response to the confusion and challenge of disease, disaster, war and evil in our day and age – a way of living that is THE WAY OF LOVE. AMEN.
