Daily Readings: 2 Samuel 7 and Psalm 84
When King David was the settled and established ruler over Israel, and the nation was at peace, he had it in his heart to build a “house for God to dwell in” (v.1-5). It was a lovely thought, and God was pleased with David’s heart. Yet God, in His great grace, insisted that now was not the time for this to happen. Instead, God promised to build a “house” for David (v.11) and for all the people of Israel (v.10). The very thing David thought he could somehow do for God, God promised to do for him. What amazing grace!
Humanity’s default position seems to be to figure out what we can do for God. Yet God is gracious and compassionate and has deigned to do it all for us. Think of Romans 6:23 – the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord! Throughout human history people have tried to “earn” our way to God and to eternal life … but God who is rich in mercy gives it to us as a free gift instead. What amazing grace!
Heavenly Father, I wonder what awesome goodness You have in store for me today! Thank you in advance for the glorious good gifts You intend to pour into my life. This goodness is completely undeserved. It is all and only because of Your grace and love. Thank You, Loving Lord! I stand in awe of You. Amen.
