Daily Readings: 2 Samuel 8 and Psalm 85
It’s easy to miss, but 2 Samuel 8 contains historical reference to the moment that God fulfilled a promise given to Abraham about the land He would give to his descendents. As David conquered Hadadezer, the king of Zobah (v.3-8), he established dominance over territory that extended all the way to the Euphrates (Genesis 15:18). God was bringing His word to completion.
David’s leadership over the Kingdom God was giving him was characterised by a few things. Firstly, he trusted completely in God and not in the power of horses and chariots (v.3-4). Secondly, the finest of any plunder of war that David brought back to Jerusalem was dedicated to God for future use in the temple. David would not see this temple during his lifetime, but he was storing up the wealth that would make it magnificent (v.7-12). Thirdly, when he ruled over God’s people, he did so with justice. David did not exploit God’s people for personal gain, but ruled them in accordance with Godly principles of rightouesness and justice (v.15). Finally, David assembled a great team of leaders to work with him to accomplish God’s purposes (v.16-18). He knew that he could never accomplish the establishment of God’s purposes in Israel as a lone ranger. So he assembled, empowered and led a team of gifted people instead.
Heavenly Father, I am not a king like David was, but I have my own life and sphere of influence. Help me to lead myself and others with a spirit of faith in You, a commitment to bring You glory, a love for justice, and a heart to bring the best out of others for the sake of Your Kingdom. use me for Your glory, I pray. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
