Kindness

Daily Readings: 2 Samuel 9 and Psalm 86

In the kingdoms of the Middle East, when a new king ascended the throne, he would often seek out any surviving members of the previous king’s household and put them to death. This was to secure the throne and ensure that no rival claim to his throne should be made in the future. In 2 Samuel 9 David made the completely counter-cultural move of actively seeking out any surviving member of Saul’s household not to destroy them but to show them kindness. This unusual and unmerited kindness was motivated by his covenant of friendship with Jonathan. And, as it so happened, the only survivors were Jonathan’s own son, Mephibosheth, and grandson, Mica. With unprecedented generosity, David guaranteed their safety, the daily provision of their needs, and the prosperity of their future generations – even giving Mephibosheth the right to eat at the king’s table every day, like one of his own sons.

There are many parallels between the way David treated Mephibosheth and the way the LORD treats us with unmerited kindness, grace and mercy. As such, this story also serves as a discipleship challenge to us, to actively seek out those people who least expect it and find creative ways to show them the same kindness that God has shown to us in Christ.

Lord Jesus Christ, thank You for Your wondrous grace and mercy towards me. Please inspire and empower me today to show active kindness, grace and mercy to others, just as You have shown to me. Amen.
