Daily Readings: 2 Samuel 14 and Psalm 90
In Psalm 90:14 Moses prayed, “Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.”
Most often we would associate Moses with the law of God, but here he shows us in the Psalm he penned that he was most motivated by a deep hunger for the love of God. The deepest longing God has placed in the human heart is for God and His unfailing love. It is a most wonderful and life-giving experience to receive the understanding and knowledge of God’s unfailing love for us, and even more so to spiritually encounter the reality of this unfailing love being ministered to us by the Holy Spirit.
King David had experienced the unfailing love of God in many ways. Most recently this had been through the mercy and forgiveness God extended to him after his grievous sin of murder. Yet, despite this experience, we see in today’s reading how David failed to extend the unfailing love of God to Absalom in turn, when he needed it.
God calls us, His beloved children, not only to open our hearts and lives to receive His unfailing love for ourselves, but also to deliberately allow that unfailing love to flow through us to those around us. When God’s unfailing love has come to us in the form of merciful forgiveness, let us be mercifully forgiving to others. When God’s unfailing love has been expressed in His constant companionship and care toward us in a time of great difficulty, let us choose to be lovingly present and supportive to others in their times of need. However we have received God’s love, let us freely give it to others.
God of unfailing love, please satisfy my inmost being throughout this day with Your unfailing love. And, by the Holy Spirit’s presence in me, empower me to minister that unfailing love to others. Amen.
