Daily Readings: 2 Samuel 16 and Psalm 92

Psalm 92:6-7 declares with defiant faith, “Senseless people do not know, fools do not understand,
that though the wicked spring up like grass and all evildoers flourish, they will be destroyed for ever.”

In this brief season, Absalom’s evil plan seemed to have been successful. He had managed to sway the hearts of the leading men of the tribes of Israel. They had betrayed David and supported Absalom’s coup. Survivors of Saul’s household had thrown in their lot with Absalom, despite David’s previous acts of mercy and kindness towards them. Even a trusted counsellor like Ahithophel, whose advice had been trusted as God-inspired, seemed to be “getting away with murder” and had begun to advise Absalom to walk in ways of great wickedness. Yet, David held on to his hope in the ultimate triumph of God’s sovereign goodness over the wickedness of his enemy, refusing to kill Shimei for cursing him and saying instead, “It may be that the Lord will look upon my misery and restore to me his covenant blessing.”

In the words of Psalm 92:15, David trusted that “‘The Lord is upright; He is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.’” He believed that, if it was God’s will for him to be restored, nothing on earth could stop that!

LORD, may Your will for my life be done – your good, pleasing and perfect will. Help me, Holy Spirit, to walk in Your ways with a heart of peace and steadfast faith, trusting in Your goodness and mercy! Amen.
