Daily Readings: 2 Samuel 20 and Psalm 96
In 2 Samuel 19 we saw how the elders of Israel took offence at not being given the opportunity to cross the Jordan with David to honour him. But these same elders happily supported Sheba’s rebellion against David. Thereby they revealed that they were never out to honour David in the first place, but only to seek a place of honour for themselves.
When we are driven by selfish and prideful desires, we will be no more than fair weather followers of Jesus. When following King Jesus gets tough or leads to dishonour and persecution we will soon abandon Him. Only when Jesus our King is our all-in-all, and we love and serve Him with our whole hearts, can we be sure that our discipleship will stand the test of time. The way the ten tribes deserted David was distressing, and it serves as a warning to us; but the loyalty of the men of Judah is a wonderful example of true faithfulness to the King. When others desert our Lord it gives us a greater opportunity to demonstrate loyalty.
Holy Spirit, please empower me today to remain faithful and true to my risen, ascended and glorified King, Jesus. May His glory and honour be my driving passion in life. Amen and amen!
