Highest place

Daily Readings: 1 Kings 7 and Psalm 107

Solomon had his priorities right, in the sense that he first built the temple of the Lord before building himself a palace. Sadly, though, it appears from the description in 1 Kings 7 that Solomon’s palace was far more ornate and grandiose than even the temple was. While the temple took 7 years to complete, his palace took a full 13 years. Could it be that Solomon placed a higher priority on his own comfort, splendour and public appearance than on the worship and glory of God?

Travelling through Europe, one will often come across magnificent cathedrals. These awe-inspiring buildings were built hundreds of years ago at great cost to people who could never have dreamed of living in such spectacular places. The fact that their most magnificent buildings were churches, said a lot about their values. So, the fact that Solomon made his palace more spectacular than the temple, said a lot about the direction his values were heading.

Heavenly Father, I long to live my life to the glory of Your Name, and to ensure that You receive the highest praise and the absolute priority in my life. Take Your rightful place, I pray, and please enable me to honour You fully, through the power of the Holy Spirit in me. Amen!
