Daily Readings: 1 Kings 21 and Psalm 119:65-96
Naboth’s refusal to sell his vineyard was probably not only because it was a good and highly productive vineyard which had been passed on to him by his father. It also seems to reflect deep respect for God’s instructions found in places like Levivticus 25:23, “The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers.” God had assigned land to each tribe, and within that tribe they had assigned land to each clan. Land was part of their heritage from the Lord. To hold it and care for it was one of the ways they honoured God. Naboth’s refusal to sell was quite probably motivated by his sense of honour for God’s sovereign rule over his life and that of Israel.
By contrast, Ahab was motivated purely by greed. He possessed so much as the king, but still he wanted more! Jezebel was, in turn, motivated by a hunger for absolute power. How dare anyone resist the will of the king. She would show them who was boss!
This part of the account should get us thinking as disciples of Jesus. What motivates me? Is it the desire to honour God? How do I view my property and privileges? Are they means to serve and glorify God? How do I respond when I don’t get my way? Am I willing to accept the “No” of God as well as His “Yes”?
Heavenly Father, as a disciple of Jesus I know what the answers should be. Please forgive me when I have been motivated by selfish desires and aims. Please forgive me when I have resisted and refused to accept Your “No” in my life. Lord, by the Holy Spirit within me, please motivate and empower me today to bring You glory, honour and praise through all of my possessions and privileges. Help me to surrender to Your greater wisdom and plan in my life. Amen!
