Daily Readings: 2 Kings 6 and Psalm 123
The way Elisha knew of the Aramean troop-movements in 2 Kings 6 seems to be an Old Testament example of the spiritual gift of knowledge. In my understanding, this gift involves a supernatural revelation of some fact that was not previously known by the person, and which they have no way of knowing by normal deduction or reasoning. The eyes of Elisha’s spirit were deliberately open and receptive to God’s revelation, and he therefore received knowledge of the manoeuvres of the Aramean troops that he could not possibly have observed with his natural eye.
Later in the chapter we see that his spiritual eyes were also deliberately open to the unseen spiritual realm. Elisha and his servant were surrounded by enemy forces overnight. His servant alerted him to the danger they were in, but Elisha was unmoved. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them,” he declared. After Elisha prayed for his servant’s eyes to be opened, he too could see the hills covered by an angelic army of horses and chariots of fire.
We cannot demand or determine when God will give us these kinds of revelations, but we are responsible to be open and receptive to the possibility that God may communicate with us in these ways. Let’s expect that when we need a supernatural impartation of knowledge in order to minister to someone in Jesus’ Name, God will supply it. And let’s apply our faith to our daily lives in such a way that we are open to observing God’s powerful presence in the unseen spiritual realm that is no more than a breath away from us at any given moment.
Lord Jesus, please open my eyes to Your presence today. When I need to, please help me to see the unseen, and to know the unknown, by the power of Your Holy Spirit. Amen!
