Daily readings: Daniel 12 and Psalm 3
The angel who spoke to Daniel in the vision warned us that “at the time of the end” (11:40) “there will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then” (12:1). Yet even in this great time of distress the angel promises that “those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever” (v.3)
Christian disciples should understand the principle of these words. When all around us is spiritual darkness and confusion, the one who lives in step with the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit will stand out like a sore thumb – that is, like the full moon in the night sky. Those who take it one step further and lead others to right standing with God – through faith in Jesus Christ – will shine like the bright light of the stars.
This is a word of warning and of encouragement at the same time. The warning is that the culture of the world surrounding us will always be dark by comparison to the will of our Holy God. As the end draws nearer this darkness will grow deeper, and it will become more difficult to keep in step with God’s will, due to the external pressure to conform. But the encouragement is that this darkness will bring into stark contrast the light (the holiness and Christlikeness) of those who live by the will and wisdom of God. In times of deeper darkness our light will shine brighter and brighter.
Our part remains constant, no matter how deep the darkness. We are to walk in the wisdom of God’s will, stay in step with the Holy Spirit, and make every effort to help others to come home to right standing with God too, so that their light may be added to ours.
Holy Spirit, please help me to keep in step with You, to walk in the wisdom of God, to live a God-honouring life, and therefore to shine like a star in the night sky of the surrounding culture. Come Holy Spirit and fill me now! Amen.
