Daily Readings: Psalm 45 and Proverbs 8
In Proverbs 8, Wisdom is personified and presented as the first creation of God. Even before He created anything physical, God created Wisdom. “The Lord formed me from the beginning, before He created anything else. I was appointed in ages past, at the very first, before the earth began.” (v.22-23)
The idea is that God established His perfect wisdom and then applied it in forming the universe, so that there are “laws of wisdom” written into the fabric of the universe, just as there are “laws of physics” that underpin how the universe “behaves”. All that God made was very good, and perfectly fit for purpose after the 6th creation day in Genesis 1 and 2, precisely because it was made in perfect wisdom. The theologian Warren Wiersbe points out: “If the whole created order is founded on God’s wisdom, then to go against His wisdom is to go against all creation. When we belong to Jesus Christ and walk in His wisdom, all of creation works for us; if we rebel against His wisdom and will, things start to work against us, as Jonah discovered when he tried to run away from the Lord.”
No wonder that personified Wisdom cries out to us to listen carefully to her voice and her instructions, and promises that everyone who does will be joyful because they will “find life and receive favour from the Lord.” (v.35) After all, when we live by Wisdom, we are living in step with the way God created life to be. So may our ears be attentive to Wisdom’s whispers today, and when we hear those whispers, may we not ignore them but respond with action.
God of Wisdom, please open my ears to Your wisdom’s voice today. Help me to be guided by Your wisdom in every decision I make, and in every thought, word and deed I express. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
