Qualities of the Wise

Daily Readings: Psalm 46 and Proverbs 10

There are many ways to approach the Book of Proverbs when reflecting on it devotionally. Today let’s consider what Proverbs 10 has to say about the many qualities of those who are wise. I’ve picked out the Good News Translation to help us cut through fancy words and see these qualities plainly. It would be very helpful if, before you read this blog post any further, you would read through the passage again intentionally compiling a list of qualities that complete this sentence:

“The person who is wise is …”

Here are the qualities which I have identified. The person who is wise is honest at all times, intent on practical godliness, hard working, a blessing to others, open to good advice, speaks openly when something is on their heart but does so with great respect and kindness towards the other, because their desire is always to build others up and never to break them down or cause them harm. The person who is wise chooses not to take personal offence at what others say or do, communicates sensibly, listens more than they speak, is willing to accept correction of their own behaviour, and refuses to spread gossip about the behaviour or character of others. Such a person is obedient to whatever they know to be God’s will.

Heavenly Father, God of all Wisdom, please transform me inwardly by the ministry of Your Spirit of Wisdom. Help me to grow in wisdom and to express that growth through my words and actions today. Amen.
