Honest Scales

Daily Readings: Psalm 47 and Proverbs 11

Honest scales are an issue for the LORD. He made this clear to His people in the Law of Moses (Leviticus 19:35-36 and Deuteronomy 25:13-16) and He does so again in Proverbs 11. Honesty in our economic dealings brings God great delight. On the other hand, cheating others through deception and dishonesty is such an issue to the LORD that He declares it an “abomination” or something “detestable” – a word reserved for deeply immoral and displeasing actions.

Remember that wisdom begins with having such reverence and awe for God that we desire nothing more than to please Him. Being disciples who are intent on pleasing God, when we discover that we can cause God great delight simply by being honest in our economic dealings it stands to reason that the wise disciple will make every effort to maintain these God-pleasing standards. And even when it feels as though scrupulous honesty in our economics will place us at a disadvantage to those who are unscrupulous, we should strengthen ourselves with the reminder that pleasing God is of ultimate value, while material wealth is fleeting. As Proverbs 11 reminds us: “Riches won’t help on the day of judgment, but right living can save you from death (v4)” and “Trust in your money and down you go! But the godly flourish like leaves in spring.”

For the disciple of Jesus, whether in this life or beyond the grave, honesty is always the best policy.

God of Wisdom, guide me by Your words of life. Spirit of Wisdom, empower me to live in step with what pleases my LORD. Amen.
