Daily Readings: Psalm 52 and Proverbs 16

“Commit your actions to the Lord,
and your plans will succeed.” (v.3)

Today’s focus verse has a real ring of Psalm 37:5 about it, “Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you.”

To “commit” (“golel” in Hebrew) everything we do and every action we take to the Lord, literally means to roll it onto the Lord in the way a rock would be “rolled” away from the entrance to a well (see Genesis 29:3, 8, 10 and Psalm 22:8 for other examples of the word’s use). “Golel” was also used to describe a person desperately “rolling” a burden off their own shoulders into the waiting hands of a helper when the load had become too heavy to carry any further.

The Proverb is a promise that if we trust in the Lord’s wisdom in order to know the right way to accomplish a task, if we surrender to the Lord’s will as best we understand it, and if we trust in the Lord’s strength for the execution of that task, the Lord will guide and empower us in the successful completion of the task. In all honesty, not everything will always turn out the way we planned, but when the Lord is in the matter because we have committed it to Him, we can rest assured that He will be at work in it for His glory and our highest best.

Lord, I roll the burden of my daily tasks onto You this morning. Please guide me in Your wisdom, grant me courage to pursue Your will, and empower me to accomplish Your purposes in everything I do. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
