Daily Readings: Psalm 90 and Micah 5:1-4
Micah wrote at a time when God was executing judgment against His people for their many sins and rebellions. He was humbling them so that they would turn to Him and be saved. This humbling came about in history through their subjection to foreign rulers, which repeated itself multiple times under various foreign powers, until finally the Roman Empire ruled the land. Micah didn’t foresee or foretell the identity of every foreign power, but by the Spirit he foresaw and foretold that during this protracted season of humbling, God would raise up the ultimate Saviour King from the humblest of beginings. From Bethlehem, “small among the clans of Judah”, this great Ruler would come.
Micah also foretold that His “origins are from of old, from ancient times.” Later, the apostle John would write of Jesus that He is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End (Rev. 22:13). The Son of God, born as Jesus, has always lived. Eternally, He has always been! John 17:5 and 17:24 tell us that there has been an eternal relationship of love, fellowship, and shared glory between the Father and the Son since before before the creation of all things. But Micah foresaw that in Bethlehem this eternal Ruler would be born of a woman and that He would be raised up to shepherd God’s people in the strength of the Lord and “in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.” Under His rule, God’s people would live securely, and His greatness and reknown will extend across the face of the earth. This is our Saviour King! This is Jesus!
Lord Jesus Christ, I honour You as the Eternal King and the Perfect Shepherd. I am profoundly humbled to be in Your Kingdom and in Your flock. Thank You for coming to rescue me, and for bringing me into new life in Your Family. May Your glory and greatness be put on display through my life today. Amen.
