Servant King

Daily Readings: Micah 5:2-4 and Luke 2:1-7

The great Feast of the Incarnation will soon be marked in enormous, gilded cathedrals all over the world. In our own homes it is bound to be marked with beautiful decorations, the exchange of gifts and much literal feasting too. But that’s a world away from the circumstances of Jesus’ birth. As we continue to reflect on the Person of our Coming Saviour, please take time to read through the passages slowly. Prayerfully consider what the circumstances of Jesus’ birth reveal to you about this Jesus. Then turn your reflection into a prayer of praise to Jesus.

Here is mine:

All hail King Jesus! You are sovereign above every imperial power, King of all kings! Wordly powers and their decrees bow down to Your Father’s providence and plan.

All hail King Jesus! You are perfect in power, yet in love You gave up power to take on infant-weakness. You are the Word of God, yet in love You gave up speech and exchanged it for cries. You are the Bread of Life, yet in love you took on absolute dependence on your mother’s milk.

All hail King Jesus! You are the King of Glory, yet in love You exchanged Your heavenly throne for a manger, and the worship of angels for the bleating of sheep. You are majestic in splendour and clothed in light, yet in love You gave that all up to be wrapped in swaddling cloths.

All of this was for us … for me. I stand in awe of You! Jesus, there may have been no room in Bethlehem’s Inn, but today I make room in my heart and my life for Your presence, power and love. Come King Jesus, and take up Your rightful place on the throne of my life today. I surrender to Your rule and reign. Amen.
