Immediate obedience

Matthew 2:13-18

“Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt … So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt.” (v.13-14)

King Herod refused to accept that anyone else could possibly rule as King, and so he set out to put the new-born Saviour-King to death. But the LORD warned Joseph in a dream and gave him clear instructions to flee to Egypt with Jesus and Mary. By his immediate obedience to this instruction, Joseph was God’s instrument for saving the young life of the One who would be the Saviour of all humanity.

It strikes me that, while Joseph’s obedience was immediate and exactly in accordance with God’s instruction, these instructions were very general. God gave no finer details of the means of travel, the route, the exact destination in Egypt, or how Joseph would provide for his little family when he got there. Joseph had to trust that God’s ongoing guidance would come to him through his own common sense and his own initiative when it came to the specifics, because clearly God trusted him to figure it out.

Will I be willing to respond the way Joseph did if and when I sense the Lord’s call?

Lord Jesus, be the King of my life today! Please help me to hear Your whispered call, and please speak simply and clearly because I am hard of hearing and slow to understand. Holy Spirit, please give me the wisdom, foresight, insight and courage which I will need in order to respond immediately and correctly. Make me an instrument of Your plans and purposes today. Amen.
