Daily Reading: John 1:1-14
This beautiful passage from John’s Gospel proclaims that in Jesus the Word of God became flesh, and dwelt among humanity, shining the light of God into our darkness and making the invisible God known to us. John 1 leaves us in no doubt that the glory of God was seen in Jesus.
Interestingly, John is the only Gospel with no account of the Transfiguration. John (who was an eyewitness to the transfiguration of Jesus) seems to have considered it less important that once, up on a mountain, the glory of God shone out of Jesus physically in a glorious out-breaking of the divine glory. John seems to have realised that the revelation of the eternal glory of the second person of the Trinity, was not only unveiled on that mountain. It was, in fact, unveiled throughout Jesus’s life on earth. This unveiling was the more significant one.
Through John 1, the Holy Spirit shows us that the lifelong unveiling of God’s glory in Jesus happened through the unspeakably beautiful and glorious way Jesus lived among us balancing perfect grace and perfect truth. Jesus lived out perfect, undeserved, unconditional, unfailing, steadfast, faithful love. And Jesus lived out perfect, uncompromising, unwavering truth and truthfulness in every way. He loved in ways that never compromised the truth; and He lived out truth and taught truth in ways that were graciously loving and life-giving. John 1 contends that this unique combination of perfect grace and perfect truth unveiled God’s glory to all with whom Jesus came into contact. Through the Gospels, Jesus still unveils God’s glory to us in this way today. And, as His disciples, we are called to carry on this unveiling today.
Lord Jesus, may the Holy Spirit reveal God’s glory through my life today, as He leads and empowers me to live in Your grace, in Your truth, and in Your perfect balance of grace and truth. Amen.
