Daily Reading: John 20:19-23
When Jesus appeared among the disciples in that locked room, they really needed to know that Jesus came to them with love and peace, not with an angry desire to avenge the betrayals, denials and abandonment they had dished out to Him in His hour of need. As they mourned together that day, they must surely have been feeling great shame for the ways they had failed Jesus. And what a shock they must have had when Jesus actually appeared. What fear and dread must have gripped their hearts! What would He say to them? What would He do to them? Would he ever love and trust them again?
But into this cauldron of confusion, shame, fear and guilt, Jesus speaks the most wonderful word: “Peace be with you!” Not once, but twice, “Peace be with you!”
There’s so much to be said about these five short verses, but let it suffice for today that we dwell prayerfully on the wonderful ministry of Jesus’ peace in the face of our shame and fear.
In this moment of encounter with the disciples, there is no accusation or condemnation in Jesus’ voice whatsoever. His greeting is soaked in absolute grace; and that in itself must have ministered instant peace to their hearts. It will minister peace to our hearts today too, if we will but allow ourselves to receive it.
Are you battling with any sense of unworthiness or guilt today? Do you feel shame or are you blaming yourself for some failure? Perhaps you are more prone to feelings of fear and insecurity about the future? Please remember the truth today, that Jesus comes to minister grace, not condemnation. All who turn to Him and confess their sins are forgiven, not condemned. All who come to Him in our weakness and fear of the future are encouraged, not shamed. So bring Him all those feelings and, by faith, hear Him whisper to your heart, “Peace. My perfect peace be with you.” Receive it now.
Amen.
