Daily Reading: Acts 14:8-20
What a joy it has been to wake to the sound of rain every morning this week. In our drought-stricken region, this feels like something very significant. At the very least, it is a reminder of the kindness of God. Thank You, Lord!
In today’s reading, Paul and Barnabas were confronted by a crowd wanting to worship them as Zeus and Hermes because of the miracle they had performed through the power of Jesus. Desperate to convince them not to, Paul rushed towards them shouting: “Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human, like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them … He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.” (v.15&17)
Notice that, to identify this “living God” to the pagan inhabitants of Lystra, Paul focused on God’s role as the Creator, and on His unconditional kindness towards all people. God is kind, and this sets Him apart! God looks upon all His dear children with immense love. He knows our needs and His love moves Him to meet those needs. He is not fickle, unpredictable and uncaring, as the pagans believed their gods to be. Instead He is loving, and He puts His love into action by being kind to us. He does this in a very personal way, of course. But He also does so towards all people through the kindnesses of sunshine and rain which come to us regardless of our theology, our worship, or even our goodness.
Our Lord Jesus calls us to reflect this kindness to all those we encounter today. Will we?
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your kindness and goodness to me. Please empower me today to reflect that kindness to others. Help me to notice the needs of others, and to meet those needs in Your name and for Your glory. Amen.
