Daily Reading: Psalm 4
The moment we fall asleep we enter a state of complete solitude. In that moment our connectedness to every other human being in our lives is put on pause. There are no conversations when we sleep, there’s no eye contact, no consciousness of touch, no jokes, debates, or arguments. We are completely alone. Except for the LORD, says Psalm 4.
Those who trust in the Lord’s providential presence, protection and care lie down to sleep in a state of peace – peace of mind and heart – knowing that we are not alone. The God who neither slumbers nor sleeps watches over us (Psalm 121:4&7). He is with us, and He plans to breathe His peace and rest into us.
When we find ourselves waking in the night with our thoughts running wildly ahead to all the dangers and difficulties of the day ahead, God wants us to know that even if we are all alone in the darkest night, pacing the hallways of our minds, He is there. He stands ready to minister His peace to us.
So bring your heart and mind to Him this morning and ask Him to renew you in His peace. And as you go to your rest again tonight, do the same. The God of peace is with you.
In peace I will lie down and sleep,
for you alone, Lord,
make me dwell in safety. Amen.
