Psalm 89

Daily Readings: Psalm 89 and Psalm 121

Today you’re invited to memorise Psalm 121:3-4:
He will not let your foot slip –
    he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

First commit it to memory and then meditate on it throughout the day in light of Psalm 89:2 & 8: “I will declare that your love stands firm for ever, that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself … Who is like you, Lord God Almighty? You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.”

The true value of a promise is determined by the character and capacity of the one making the promise. The promise of protection and care presented to us in Psalm 121:3-4 would only be empty words if the One making it was unable, unfaithful or unloving. Its true value lies not in the lovely words of the promise, but in the character and capacity of the Promise Maker.

As Psalm 89 testifies in so many ways, the Promise Maker is the God of eternal and unfailing love whose desire is our highest best, His faithfulness and trustworthiness are absolutely irrefutable, and His Almighty power is irresistible.

The LORD God Almighty is absolutely able, utterly faithful, and infinitely loving. So we can personalise the words of Psalm 121:1-4 and say with confidence today:

I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let (my) foot slip – he who watches over (me) will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over (me) will neither slumber nor sleep.
AMEN!
