Daily Readings: Psalm 90 and Psalm 121
Today you’re invited to memorise Psalm 121:5-6
5 The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
First take time to commit it to memory and then meditate on it throughout the day in light of Psalm 90, and particularly v.14
14 Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love,
that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
The image of Psalm 121:5-6 is of God walking along with His beloved children, shielding us from the dangers of both day and night.
For the ancient Israelites on their pilgrimage up to the House of the Lord, the scorching sun carried very real physical danger by day; and the night-time under the wilderness moon was filled with its own unique fears – some superstitious and some very real with very sharp teeth. Psalm 121 held out the promise to them – and it holds out the promise to us – that the Lord will be with us to protect us (to “keep” us) – to shade us from the visible dangers of the day as well as the hidden dangers of the night. What wonderful reassurance these promises bring.
Psalm 89:14 adds beautifully to the imagery. Each morning of our lives it invites us to accept and experience the truth that we are surrounded and shielded by God’s perfect, unfailing love. No matter what dangers or difficulties might await us in the day ahead, we are safely held in His perfect love for us. His unfailing love has held us through the night, and it will accompany us through the coming day. Our only proper response is to “sing for joy and be glad all our days”.
Lord, satisfy my heart with the awareness of Your unfailing love for me and sustain me throughout the day by Your presence and protection. When danger befalls me, deliver me from evil, turn it around, use it for good. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen!
