Psalm 96-97

Daily Readings: Psalm 96-97 and Psalm 121

Today you’re invited to memorise Psalm 121:7-8,
The Lord will keep you from all harm –
    he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
    both now and for evermore.

First commit it to memory and then reflect on it throughout the day in light of Psalm 97:3-5

Fire goes before him
    and consumes his foes on every side.
His lightning lights up the world;
    the earth sees and trembles.
The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,
    before the Lord of all the earth.

When someone is tasked with protecting you, the measure of your security is not based on your strength, resources or abilities. It is based entirely on theirs. The good news of Psalm 97 is that no one but no one can stand against the LORD Almighty. By His power, every foe is defeated, and every obstacle is melted. So if God is for us, no evil can overcome us.

Many times life happens (as they say) and we have very painful, difficult and even disastrous experiences. Everything does not go right all the time. Not everything works out the way we wish. Hardship and struggle come our way (just as Jesus warned us it would). But the promise of Psalm 121 is that the Lord will watch over us in every circumstance to keep us from all “harm”. More literally that word should be translated “evil”. God’s promise is that no matter what happens to us, the purposes of evil will not prevail. God will take even the most painful thing that happens to us and turn it around for our good.

Let’s believe that today and trust wholeheartedly in this great and glorious God who watches over every second of our life in this world, from our entering to our leaving and everything in-between. Let’s trust Him to work in our lives for our good and His glory, and to be present to us to “keep us” this day … and forevermore. Amen.
