Daily Readings: Psalm 124 and Psalm 126
Today you’re invited to memorise Psalm 126:6
Those who go out weeping,
carrying seed to sow,
will return with songs of joy,
carrying sheaves with them.
First commit it to memory and then meditate on it throughout the day in light of Psalm 124:8
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
The author of Psalm 126 is able to make the massive faith statement he does in v.6 precisely because, as Psalm 124:8 says, his “help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of Heaven and Earth.” Both psalmists had seen the deliverance of the Lord in the past (Ps. 124:1-7 and Ps. 126:1-3) and so, as they looked to the future, their hope and their confidence were not in their own strengths and abilities but “in the Name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth”. The same God who saved them back then, was still sovereign over the heavens and the earth and He would save them (Ps. 124) and provide for them (Ps. 126) again.
The Lord’s Name, of course, refers to His identity and character! So, whereas earlier this week we were reminded of the importance of reflecting on God’s past works of salvation and provision for us. Today let’s reflect on Who God is! The LORD is the Creator and Sustainer of life. He is the Healer and Restorer of broken lives. He is the Omnipotent Provider and Protector. He is our Fountain of Wisdom and Comfort. He is the Lover of our souls, our Best Friend and our Father who walk with us every single step of the way. At least … that’s a start.
Take time today to pause regularly and simply pray out loud (under your breath if necessary): “Lord You are … (and complete the sentence declaring the identity and character of our God). Amen.
