Faithfulness on Monday

This week we’re considering the Christian Value of Faithfulness.

Faithfulness is the quality of being steadfast, dedicated, dependable, loyal and worthy of trust. It is very closely related to last week’s value of Truth, because it is the quality of doing what we say we will do, or what we have otherwise committed ourselves to doing. Faithfulness is essentially truthfulness in our actions. The central idea is that a faithful person is completely loyal and dedicated to another person or to God.

Daily Reading: Proverbs 3:3-4

Let love and faithfulness never leave you;
    bind them round your neck,
    write them on the tablet of your heart.
Then you will win favour and a good name
    in the sight of God and man.

Faithfulness is an expression of truth in our actions, and it is equally an expression of love in action. A lack of faithfulness towards someone we claim to love proves the weakness or inadequacy of our love. If you need evidence of that statement, simply think of how profoundly unloving it feels when someone is unfaithful to you. By contrast, when someone exceeds your expectations by being faithful to you, I’m sure you feel deeply loved.

Proverbs 3:4 seems to indicate that God is just as blessed by our faithfulness to Him, as a friend or loved one is by our faithfulness to them. So today let us strive to be people who prove ourselves to be dependable and trustworthy by keeping our word and remaining faithful and loyal to those around us in every way we can.

Faithful Father, You have been eternally faithful to your beloved children. You have loved us with unfailing love, and You have kept Your covenant with us, even when we have repeatedly been unfaithful to you. By the power of the Holy Spirit, enable me to be faithful as You are faithful, and to love as You love. In the Name of Jesus Who is forever Faithful and True. Amen.
