Pleasing words

Daily Reading: Ephesians 4:29- 32

If we ever needed a better reason than just common human decency to guard our tongues, surely this is it: “30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

As children of God through faith in Jesus Christ, the words we speak are either pleasing to the indwelling Holy Spirit (because they minister His love and encouragement to those He loves) or grieving (because they break down those He loves). So the Word of God makes our choice brutally plain: Either we “let unwholesome talk come out of our mouths,” or we refuse to do so and only allow past our lips words that are “helpful for building others up according to their needs” with the desire to “benefit those who listen”.

No matter how we may feel about the person in front of us, our calling from God is to set our hearts on pleasing the indwelling Holy Spirit by what we say. Our calling is not to think about what our emotions want to say, or even just what our mind wants to say. It is being aware and alert enough in the moment before we speak out loud that we can check the Spirit’s desire and speak accordingly. Truly, only His amazing sanctifying grace can accomplish this.

Come Holy Spirit, sanctify me through and through, so that every word i speak may be delightful and pleasing to You. Amen.
