Daily Reading: Galatians 6:9-10
“10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”
Although it can feel like a tired cliché, “Charity begins at home” is a very Christian concept. We do bear the responsibility of being Christ-like by doing good and being lovingly generous towards all people – just as Christ gave His life for all. But we especially bear the responibility of grace-filled generosity towards those who belong to Christ’s Kingdom-Family with us.
Through our faith in Christ we are brought into a new family-relationship with those who hold the same faith and share in the same salvation as we have received. With them, we are in relationship with the same Lord and belong to the same Household of God’s Family. We are family, and our responsiblity towards our new Family is greater than that towards others who choose to remain outside the Family. We do not grow less generous to outsiders, but we do grow more generous towards our Family-members as the grace of God flows through us to them.
Lord, let Your grace flow freely through me to my Family-in-Christ today. Grant me a spirit of generosity and the capacity to love more completely through the grace of giving. Amen!
