Daily Readings: James 3:13-18 and Proverbs 2:1-22
Today, let’s think about those two types of wisdom James identifies.
First there is “earthly, unspiritual, demonic” wisdom. As we saw earlier this week, Godly wisdom is the pursuit of what is pleasing to God. By contrast, James points out that “earthly” wisdom is the pursuit of selfish ambition. Godly wisdom puts God at the centre of our lives and earthly wisdom puts ourselves at the centre.
James is brutally honest about the destructive outcome of this earthly wisdom. When someone has a self-centred approach to life, “disorder and evil practices” are not far behind (v.16).
Similarly, Proverbs 2 warns us that neglecting godly wisdom will lead us to “walk in dark ways” (v.13). Following “earthly wisdom” will lead us “to death” (v.18) and to being “cut off from the land” (v.22). These are some of the ultimate fruits of selfish ambition, and they are the reason that the God who loves us advises us so strongly against living our lives by it.
In the light of these warnings, Proverbs 2 advises us to intentionally search for wisdom and understanding as one searches for hidden treasure, because true and godly wisdom ultimately leads to God’s blessing, to success (v.7), and to God’s protection (v.8 & 11). Wisdom truly is a treasure to be desired and pursued!
As disciples of Jesus, it’s not that we will automatically know exactly what to do and how to do it. But we do have the promise of God that if we will seek wisdom, He will give it to us (James 1:5). He will guide us and empower us by the Holy Spirit (Philippians 2:13).
Holy Spirit, help me to turn my ears to wisdom and apply my heart to understanding. I call out now for insight and understanding. I desire it as I would a hidden treasure. Help me to understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For I know that You give wisdom and from Your mouth come knowledge and understanding. Amen!
