Having focussed on the Lord as our Salvation last week, this week we turn our attention to readings that proclaim that the Lord is our King.
Daily Reading: Psalm 47
Key verse:
2 For the Lord Most High is awesome,
the great King over all the earth.
It’s most likely that this Psalm was written after God had miraculously granted the Israelites (“the pride of Jacob”) victory over an attacking alliance of nations. One distinct possibility was the victory won under King Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20.
Reflecting on such a great victory, those national hymn-writers, the Sons of Korah, saw and then expressed some glorious truths about their God, Yahweh. This victory had revealed the awesome authority of the LORD Most High, Who not only had royal power and authority over the tiny nation of Israel, but also over all the earth, every nation, and every people.
By the will of God, His people had been granted victory and a rich inheritance, despite being vastly outnumbered and under-resourced; and they had come to realise that no king or nation could overcome the LORD, no matter how powerful their army might be.
In light of the greatness, glory and sovereignty of the LORD, His people are called to respond with clapping hands, shouts of joy and songs of praise. They are called to celebrate the goodness, greatness and generosity of the LORD in every way they can.
Take time to consider how you might express the greatness and royal authority of the LORD over your life today. Consider the confidence with which you can enter every situation today, knowing that the awesome, Lord Most High is with you, and that ultimately His good, pleasing and perfect will for you will be done.
Awesome and most Holy High King of Heaven, I surrender my life to Your rule and reign today. I joyfully submit to Your authority over me, and I pray that You will glorify Yourself through my life today. I acknowledge that You reign above all other powers that may align themselves against Your will for my life and I commit to trust You and obey You today, my King. Amen.
