Surely

Daily Reading: Mark 15:33-39

Key verse: 39 And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, ‘Surely this man was the Son of God!’

I nailed hundreds to those crosses
No other compared to You.
You drew near to death,
And the cosmos grieved in darkness.
It mourned for You like no other.

In Your dying agony,
in utter forsakenness
You lifted Your eyes and prayed,
‘My God, My God’.
You asked Your heart-breaking, ‘Why’,
But even then,
in agonised confusion,
You did not curse God and die.
You were like no other!

You called down no curses on those
who maligned and mocked,
tortured and taunted.
A Lamb to the slaughter,
You were silent,
With nothing but love in Your eyes, You did not hate them and die.
You were like no other!

You died,
No scream of agony, anger, or terror
as so many on these crosses before You had done,
You did not fear or faint and die.
You were like no other!

You died,
not with a whimper,
a sob or a whisper,
With a cry of victory on Your lips
You died,
You were like no other!

Deep darkness,
Deep silence,
Deep prayer,
Deep peace,
Deep trust,
Deep love …
Surely there is no other
You are the Son of God.

Amen
