Daily Readings: Matthew 9 and Psalm 9
Matthew 9:35 marks the end of a remarkable season of Jesus’ ministry, which is described between Matthew 4:23 and Matthew 9:35. These two virtually identical verses explain that, during the season they ‘bracket’, “Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages of that area (the region of Galilee), teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness…”
Everything that lies between these two virtually identical verses is the highlight-reel of that season, including the profound teaching of the Sermon on the Mount, the incredible healing miracles of chapter 8-9, and the announcements of the Good News of the Kingdom throughout.
As the report of that season ends, Matthew 9:36 highlights that Jesus’ motivation for all of this was Compassion. He demonstrated the power and authority and truth of the Kingdom because His heart was so deeply moved with compassion. He felt the pain and struggle of those suffering from diseases or demonization – so He had mercy on them and healed them. He felt the confusion of the ordinary people – so He took pity on them and taught them the truth. He felt the lostness of sinners and outcasts – so He led them home to God’s Family. His deep compassion moved Him to meet their needs by the power and authority He possessed.
Life Application: Will you follow Jesus’ example today? Look around you intentionally to notice someone’s struggles. Instead of looking the other way and moving swiftly along, ask the Holy Spirit to move your heart by the things that move His, and to show you how to respond. Perhaps He will move you to pray right there and then with someone today, share a word of encouragement, or meet a physical need … all because of His compassion.
9 The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
10 Those who know your name trust in you,
for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you. (Psalm 9:9-10 NIVUK)
