Impossible discipleship

Daily Readings: Matthew 19 and Psalm 19

25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, ‘Who then can be saved?’ 26 Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’

In Matthew 19, the disciples come to the realization that following Jesus and meeting His expectations of discipleship are impossible tasks. If following Jesus means surrendering to His Lordship even in those parts of our lives that are as powerfully complex as our sexuality, marriages, and singleness (v.1-12), or as powerfully tempting and controlling as our finances (v.16-24), they ask: “Who then can be saved?” (v.25)

Who indeed?

Jesus’ response tells us that they are correct in their assessment: With man this is impossible.” But Jesus then gives us hope when He immediately adds, “But with God all things are possible.’ (v.26)

Being a faithful disciple of Jesus is an impossible task. Except, that is, when one follows in childlike, humble trust and obedience (v.15) and is therefore receptive to the supernatural enabling of God (v.26). Then, and then only, is it possible. It is impossible to live a Christ-following life when one attempts to follow in one’s own strength. But in His strength, and through His enabling Spirit, all things are possible – even this.

Life application: Today, when you find yourself knowing what the Lord desires of you, ask immediately for the Holy Spirit’s power to help you be obedient in that situation. Not only will this enable obedience in situations that seem impossible, but also in situations where you are blind to the difficulties that will arise once you step out in obedience.
