His Great Love

Daaily Readings: Ephesians 2 and Psalm 139

In Ephesians 2, “the incomparable riches of God’s grace” are celebrated. We are reminded that, before God intervened, we were physically alive but spiritually separated from God. We were spiritually “dead in our transgressions and sin” and thoroughly deserving of God’s judgment. We had done absolutely nothing to be deserving of God’s intervention. Then comes this glorious statement: “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ.”

God, in His great love, resuscitated us from our state of spiritual death and gave us life. This was purely by His undeserved love, mercy and kindness towards us: “8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.

Because God loves us with immeasurable love, He sent Christ to open the door for us to return to Him, He drew us to the place of trusting in Christ and, in the moment we placed our faith in Christ, He welcomed us home into His family and He poured His own life into us. This is all an act of God and His awesome love. Our salvation and the new life we now have in Christ is purely because of God and His great, amazing, outrageous, incomparable, undeserved love for us!

Life Application: I’m tempted to go further and point to the response Paul says we should make to this outrageous love. But for today let’s simply marvel that God loves us the way He does. We are saved from sin and death and have been given new life purely as an act of God’s incomparable love for us. Revel in that love today, and give thanks!
