Our Saviour is Born

Daily Readings: Luke 2 and Psalm 18

The history of the world shifted on what would later be written and sung about as that “Holy Night” – the night of Jesus’ birth. The Son of God had been conceived and carried to term in a womb He had created. He had survived on the amniotic fluid He had conceived of as He designed humanity at the dawn of time. Now He breathed the air of our atmosphere, and the One through whom and for whom all things were created (Romans 11:36) was tenderly wrapped in cloths and cradled in a manger. The Almighty had taken on absolute frailty. Why? Well Luke 2 holds many clues to the answer.

In the space of the fifty two verses of Luke 2, we are told by angels, shepherds, Simeon, Anna, the 12-year old Jesus, and Luke (in v.11; 14; 26; 30; 32; 38; 40) that the Almighty One took on our frailty because He was (and is) the Saviour of humanity, God’s Anointed Saviour King (the Christ/Messiah). He was (and is) our Peace, our Salvation, our Light, our Liberator; our Wisdom and the very Son of God!

In Luke 2 we are on holy ground, because in it we witness the arrival of the One who came to rescue us from the power of sin, the curse of death, and the sentence of eternal separation from God, and to usher us in to an eternally abundant life of forgiveness, victory over temptation and sin, peace with God, restoration of our humanity, and eternal fellowship with God. Praise be to Jesus our Saviour King!

Life application: Perhaps the best application is to take a deep breath, read Luke 2 again, let the wonder of it all wash over you, and treasure it up in your heart like Mary did.
