Psalm 69

Almighty God,
Hear my honest prayer
as I pour out my heart to You
in moments of utter desperation –
treading water,
lost at sea,
no land in sight,
swells so high,
waves towering over me,
choking,
hoarse from screaming
for help
in vain,
my cries
swallowed by the wind,
unheard,
unheeded,
no help at hand:
“Help, LORD, help!”

Waves
rise up to overwhelm me;
Waves
not made of water.
Waves
of hatred and malicious lies,
of heartless insults and injustice;
Waves
of abandonment and isolation,
of merciless mocking and scorn.
Waves
of disgrace and dishonour,
of senseless shame and humiliation.
Drowning, Lord,
I’m drowning
in despair
and pain.
“Help, LORD, help!”

Not because I deserve it,
but because of
Your boundless mercy and faithfulness,
You endless compassion and goodness
and Your unfailing love;
not because of who I am
but because of Who You are!
“Help, LORD, help!”

O LORD,
Silence the waves
of their poisonous tongues,
the insults, disgrace and dishonour.
Silence the waves of my poisonous thoughts,
the heartbreak, pain and despair.

And when You come to my rescue,
may I
and all who see Your rescue unfold
stand in awe of You,
worship You and
trust You
forever!

O come to my rescue, LORD
and I will praise Your greatness
Your goodness and glory,
with songs of joy
and cries of thanksgiving;
I will praise Your faithfulness,
Your compassion and power.

And all who see will marvel,
and all who see will rejoice,
and all who see will take heart in You
the Sovereign Lord Almighty
my God and my King
forever.
