Proverbs 5

Prayer

Omniscient God, I worship You with all my heart, and I long to worship You with my entire life! Show me how my life can be more pleasing to You today. Amen.

Reading

Read Proverbs 5 slowly and prayerfully. Notice which verse particularly jumps out at you. Re-read that verse a few times slowly. Write it down in your journal. Try to memorise it so that you can reflect on it without having to read from the page.

Prayerful Reflection

Now take that Proverb and think about your life at the moment. Is there a situation in your life to which that Proverb applies. Ask the Lord how this verse from His Word is telling you to live out His wisdom in that situation. Make notes in your journal.

A Devotional Thought

Proverbs 5:
21
For your ways are in full view of the Lord,
and he examines all your paths.

In Proverbs 1 we learned that the fear of the Lord is where a life of wisdom begins, because it entails a reorientation of our lives towards a new priority. That priority is to please the Lord. The fear of the Lord is a matter of longing to please God in absolutely everything, and hence to stay in step with God’s revealed will.

In that vein, Proverbs 5:21 reminds me that nothing, but nothing, is hidden from the Lord’s sight. Everything I think, say and do matters in my quest to bring delight to the Lord.

Satan will often tempt us with the lie that what we do in private doesn’t matter, or that if no one is harmed by some behaviour of ours, there can’t possibly be anything wrong with it. In the context of Proverbs 5 that lie would relate to things like romantic or sexual intimacy between two consenting adults in private, or the seductive images or videos someone looks at when no one else is around.

“No!”, shouts Proverbs 5:21, “God is always with us. God sees all. Everything is public to God! And all that matters is how God feels and what God thinks about the way we live the lives He has given us. Let that be your guide in every single moment of your life.”

Prayer

Lord give me the grace to live every moment of my life today in a full awareness of Your beautiful, holy presence with me. And may that awareness completely revolutionise the way I think, speak and act. Amen.
